According to the Canadian Continence Foundation, 3.3 million Canadians suffer from this condition. You are not alone. Incontinence consists of five main conditions, with the two most prevalent being stress and urge incontinence. If you feel you may be experiencing one of the following, the first step is to speak with a medical professional to discuss options, and work with them for a treatment plan that meets your needs. People experience different levels, from light to severe.
When choosing the right products for your needs, the starting point is knowing what level of incontinence you have.
Stress incontinence – when the pelvic floor muscles are too weak to prevent urination, urine may leak when your bladder is under pressure. Examples of stress incontinence include urination while coughing or laughing.
Urge incontinence – when urine leaks immediately after you feel an intense urge to pass urine.
Overflow incontinence – overflow incontinence occurs when your bladder is always so full that it frequently leaks urine. Weak bladder muscles, resulting in incomplete emptying of the bladder or a blocked urethra can cause this type of incontinence.
Functional incontinence – people with this type of incontinence have difficulty in getting to and using the toilet when the urge arises, being unable to stop once flow has started. The bladder empties without warning. Also, urine loss during sleep causing bed wetting.
Bowel incontinence is the loss of bowel control, leading to an involuntary passage of stool.
